Shortly after the government eased quarantine restrictions in many parts of the country, at least 21 members of the Adventure Team Philippines, Inc. (ATPI) embarked on a three-day endurance ride to the Cordillera mountains astride their motorbikes.

The days of hibernation are about to end for these riders. It was their first time to return to the mystical mountain range after two years of limited travel due to the pandemic.

Before the lockdowns, the ATPI-organized Cordillera Adventure Tour (CAT) has allowed motorcycle enthusiasts to discover and explore the countless scenic spots in the region. The Cordilleras cover six provinces that serve as home to rich cultures, sumptuous delicacies, and friendly people.

If a rider completes the required distance, they earn a certificate of achievement, a finisher’s shirt that read Conqueror, and CAT stickers. The P2,000 registration fee also entitles them to a map.

ATPI founder Francis Rivera led the pack in touring the Cordilleras, starting from Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya last Oct. 22, before proceeding to Banaue, Mountain Province, and Tabuk City, Apayao.

ATPI has chosen Aritao as the new jumping-off point, since quarantine restrictions in Baguio City change every now and then. CAT offers four routes, each requiring a different riding skill level. The hardest way, Level 4, has the most road challenges, and leads adventure-seekers from Cabanatuan City to Isabela Province.

As part of the validation process, riders must take selfies and images of the odometer reading at checkpoints, depending on the chosen route.

What about guidelines from local government units (LGUs) along the way? Rivera says participants must register at Safe, Swift and Smart Passage, a travel management system that updates visitors on local health protocols. They must also bring a negative RT-PCR test result.

Rivera expects the number of CAT riders to increase in the coming months as the government intensifies its vaccination efforts, in conjunction with the strict observance of health protocols.
