Being an events photographer took Jerick Cabantog to different scenic locations around the Philippines.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Cabantog’s travel plans for business and pleasure came to a screeching halt. To cope with lockdown stress, he bought a bicycle in July 2020 and started the Facebook page ByaHero PH to share photos, videos, tips, and itineraries to his fellow travel enthusiasts.
“At first, it was just for exercise, used it to go around town and nearby places,” he said in an interview. “After some time had passed, I found myself really enjoying biking and started going to farther places.”
From going on 3-4 short rides and one long ride—every Friday or Saturday—a week, Cabantog had already conquered all 200km of the Laguna Loop for his first solo and also longest ride.
He shared:“I mustered the courage to do so. It’s considered a great achievement in itself, more so if you do it solo. On that ride, I even got lost around Muntinlupa because I lost data connection and I wasn’t able to use Waze. I was able to find the place by asking around. That ride was also my farthest one so far...”
But the one that made him want to take biking seriously? His first long ride to Mini Tayak in San Pablo.
“It’s considerably far from my town and has an uphill route. While the steep ride proved to be difficult, when I got to the top, I realized that biking was fulfilling. Getting to the place you want to go makes the tiring ride worth it,” Cabantog explained.
