Ask motorcycle groups and we bet fresh air and lush green surroundings are among their primary considerations when choosing travel destinations.

This is why Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) is now pushing solar energy as its primary source of power for tollway operations, with the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) serving as pilot area.

CALAX, which connects the two provinces, uses innovative green technologies to lessen carbon emissions in the tollways and its surrounding areas, which will have a total distance of 45km when construction is completed. As of writing, only the portion from Biñan, Laguna to Silang, Cavite is open to motorists.

“This is in alignment with the company’s commitment to building with least disruption to communities and environment, and supporting the Philippines’ first National Determined Contribution (NDC) commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 75% by the year 2030,” says Christopher Lizo, MPTC chief finance office and senior executive sponsor for sustainability.

The tollway company installed solar panels at the existing toll plazas in the operational areas of CALAX. This alternative source of energy produces a total power output of 116.5kWp.

Since the installation of solar panels four months ago, MPTC believes that it has reduced more than 10,200kg of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to having 304 trees planted in the area to help transform harmful gas into breathable oxygen.

The corporation is also optimistic that the panels and inverters will be operational for more than 25 years and 10 years, respectively.

To lessen its dependence on electricity, MPTC also installed lamp posts using LED along the tollway system. Soon, it will only be using energy-efficient refrigerators and air-conditioning units in every building.

So-called ‘green spaces’ were put up along CALAX, specifically at the Mamplasan toll plaza, Sta. Rosa Interchange, and Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay exit/entry, where the company aims to plant some 20,000 trees by the end of 2022.

If you’re looking for a relaxing ride this weekend, try CALAX and feel the difference!
