The local motorcycle club teamed up with Dirk Oehlerking’s German custom shop, whose modified BMW R18 dubbed ‘Spirit of Passion’ made headlines earlier this year. The custom heritage cruiser sported art deco fairing and wing, as well as signature Kingston detailing and finish.
Banno, who added the custom R18 to his collection of rare bikes, shared what riding does for him, saying: “When you’re riding a motorcycle, you basically have to focus sa ginagawa mo. Hindi ka pwedeng mag-isip ng mga problema mo sa bahay or office.
“It’s the time where kailangan para kang nagme-meditate, na nare-relax yung utak mo... And of course yung bonding mo with other motorcycle enthusiasts. Yun yung camaraderie na yun kaya ka nagmo-motor.”
For his part, Kuya Kim offered a piece of advice to those who are thinking about getting into motorcycles: “Isipin mo na lahat ng motorsiklo may ugali. If you want speed, then you get into sportbikes. If you want to just relax and cruise around, then get a cruiser bike. Kung gusto mo sa coffee shop ka, get a cafe racer... Piliin mo yung bike na husto dun sa ugali mo.”
When BMW Motorrad enlisted select designers for the SoulFuel series last January, Oehlerking said: “I put a lot of thought into it beforehand. My motorbikes always convey soul, charm, and character. They’re outstanding specimens, so they require great care and attention. I have a constant stream of images running past my mind’s eye when it comes to deciding what style I want to focus on.
“Once I’ve made that choice, I start with a sketch in pencil and Tipp-Ex. Then I keep going until I know in my heart of hearts: that’s precisely it!”
