With motorcycle accidents on the rise, it only makes sense for manufacturers to take note and try to prevent such unfortunate incidents. Harley-Davidson, for its part, has cooked up a program aptly named ‘Safer Streets’ for riders in the Philippines.
The sustained advocacy of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) Davao Chapter aims to make local roads less dangerous through a safety awareness campaign for both motorcyclists and the motoring public.
Safer Streets was launched in Davao City and its surrounding areas to focus on establishing a comprehensive program to inform, train, and guide motorcycle riders and motorists.
To accomplish its goals, the HOG chapter has partnered up with Harley-Davidson of Davao, Harley-Davidson of Cebu, Davao LGUs, Land Transportation Office (LTO), Constabulary Highway Patrol Group (CHPG), City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO), and Department of Health (DOH), telecommunications companies, insurance providers, riding gear brands, pharmaceutical companies, as well as other bike brands for small displacement motorcycles.
The program is inclusive in its target demographic—from big bikes to scooters, and even underbones. It’s set to be implemented in three waves: first to motorcycle club (MC) presidents, then MC members, before individual riders.
The program’s main activity, the Safer Streets Camp, is a one-day event where participants will unlearn bad habits and develop proper safe riding techniques. Following lectures on defensive riding and road safety, participants will take part in an actual riding clinic facilitated by certified motorcycle trainers.
Sponsors will set up booths at the event, and there will be raffles throughout the day.
Those who will join will receive a Safer Streets sticker and patch. The program hopes to provide advocates with benefits and perks such as discounts on motorcycle insurance, riding gear, and preventive maintenance, as well as LTO Express Lane usage, roadside assistance, free accident insurance, and fuel discounts.
