The lightweight sportbike segment expands once again with the latest offering from Chinese-Italian brand Benelli—the Tornado 252R. The fully faired ride aims to contend with class leaders like the iconic Kawasaki Ninja 250, the Yamaha YZF R3/R25, and the KTM RC200.

Young riders in Asia and Europe appear to be the target market for bikes like this. After all, it’s hard for a teenager to resist the appeal of a fast-looking motorcycle at an affordable price point.

At the heart of the newest Tornado is a 249cc DOHC parallel-twin engine, good for about 26hp and 24Nm of torque. These numbers won’t impress seasoned riders, but are more than adequate for first-time motorcyclists. The little twin-cylinder motor will have to lug around 177kg of weight, which is held up by an inverted front fork and rear monoshock setup.

Shifting the manual gearbox is made easier by a slipper clutch, while braking with the front and rear disc combo is made safer with ABS.

An LCD instrument panel with phone connectivity provides necessary info, bringing the Tornado 252R into line with the current trend of ‘connected’ motorcycles.

In terms of styling, the bike is distinctive. An oval-shaped projector headlamp is flanked by slit lights on both sides, making for quite a unique face. Color options include green, red, and black, which all work well with the racy fairings.

Pricing in China, where the bike has first been released, starts at 25,800 Yuan (approximately P200,000).
