Are you among those anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 2021 Yamaha MT-09? Well, here’s some good news for you.
Pictured here is the first unit on Philippine shores, which we saw when we made a surprise visit to the RevZone dealership in Quezon City this afternoon. However, the sales representatives claimed that the lone MT-09 in the showroom is a display unit.
They also could not say when the main batch of this hyper-naked bike will be available, though we have seen some unboxed units at YZone in Mandaluyong City. The 2021 MT-09, according to them, is priced at P629,000. That’s quite a big jump from the current MT-09 offered at P569,000. We even asked them thrice just to make sure we got the figures right.
Take note: The unit we spotted is not even the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP, an upgraded model with cruise control, fully adjustable KYB forks, and an Öhlins rear shock.
Among the new features of the 2021 MT-09 is its 890cc three-cylinder mill, which is bigger than its predecessor by 43 cubic centimeters. This new powerplant produces 117hp at 10,000rpm, or an additional 4hp from the older version, while the maximum torque is now 93Nm at 7,000rpm.
The revised engine, now Euro-5 compliant, is paired to a six-speed transmission. The new MT-09’s suite of features include a six-axis inertial measurement unit, plus a Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle and an Accelerator Position Sensor Grip derived from the YZF-R1.
It also has a three-mode traction control system.
The new MT-09 is fitted with a 3.5-inch full-color TFT display that features a bar-type tachometer, which changes color when the engine is revved. It also shows the fuel level, fuel economy, water temperature, and gear.
We noticed that the 2020 MT-09s are still available at YZone, and likely in other Yamaha big bike dealerships as well. Question is, are you willing to pay extra for the 2021 MT-09’s new features?
