It seems that the age of maxi-scooters really has come. This time, it’s Yamaha’s Tricity 300 that receives design accolades—the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2021.
The Tricity name should be familiar to Filipino riders, as Yamaha sells the Tricity 125 locally. Known for its quirky three-wheel design, the Tricity has found its niche in the Philippine market as a safe and convenient commuter and dependable delivery bike. Marketed as a leaning multi-wheel model in Europe, the Tricity 300 aims to make commuting easy, simple, and fun with the stability and grip provided by the dual front wheels complementing the scooter’s lightweight steering and filtering-capable form factor.
At the Tricity 300’s heart is a Euro 5-compliant 300cc single-cylinder engine that’s good for 27.62hp at 7,250rpm and 29Nm of torque at 5,750rpm. Power gets to the ground through a V-belt automatic transmission that allows for twist-and-go convenience.
To aid in its role as an urban mobility machine, the Yamaha Tricity 300 has a bunch of neat commuting and convenience features. A Standing Assist System helps the rider keep the scooter upright at stops, making stop-and-go city riding a bit easier. Storage is more than ample with an underseat compartment that can fit up to two full-face helmets or an A4-size briefcase, a front panel with a power outlet, and a smart key that locks and unlocks all of these. An LCD instrument panel provides all necessary info, as well as indicators for the included ABS, Standing Assist System, traction control, and even ambient air temperature.
Safety isn’t compromised, either. In addition to both ABS and TCS, the Tricity rolls out of the factory with Yamaha’s unified braking system that allows the scooter’s three 267mm brake rotors to provide as much stopping power as possible.
The iF Design Award is run by the iF Design Foundation in Hannover, Germany. Superior industrial product designs are chosen from all over the world for the award each year. The Red Dot Design Awards, organized by Germany’s Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, is widely recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious awarding bodies.
