Let’s hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) secretary Arthur Tugade has confirmed that he was nominated by the Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to be one of its 12 senatorial bets for the May 2022 elections.
In a statement released to media this morning, the transport chief said, “Nakakataba ng puso na ako ay naisama sa listahan. Kahit na ako ay bagito pa lamang sa larangan ng pulitika.”
The PDP-Laban’s nomination came in the wake of controversies hounding the private motor vehicle inspection center (PMVIC), which is one of Tugade’s pet projects that affect millions of vehicle owners in the country. That’s a lot of votes.
Yesterday, he ordered the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to suspend the implementation of the mandatory PMVIC testing after the Senate committee on public services headed by senator Grace Poe questioned its timing and other critical issues that were reportedly based on the complaints of motorists.
Apparently, this issues would not hinder Tugade from pursuing his senatorial bid: “Ipagpapasa-Diyos ko na lamang kung ano ang mangyayari at saan ako mapunta sa hinaharap. Ngunit, tandaan ninyo na saan man ako mapunta, serbisyo sa bayan at sa tao ang lagning mangunguna.”
The DOTr secretary joins the likes of House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) secretary Gregorio Honasan, and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Mark Villar as PDP-Laban’s Senate nominees.
Tugade expressed his gratitude to the leadership of PDP-Laban, particularly President Rodrigo Duterte, for officially including him in their list of senatorial bets. “Maraming salamat, dahil ako ay naihanay sa ticket ng ating Pangulo, na siyang tatakbo bilang bise presidente. Isa itong malaking karangalan,“ he added.
