BMW Motorrad has thrown its hat into the ring of electric bicycle competition with the i Vision AMBY, and with its electric motorcycle counterpart, the Vision AMBY.

Confused by the nearly identical names? Let’s take a look at the differences between the two.

The i Vision AMBY is basically BMW’s version of an e-bike. In addition to pedal power, this cycle packs a 2,000wh battery that allows for up to 300km of motor-assisted range. Three modes are accessible through the accompanying smartphone app—a European-legal 25 kph; a mid-speed pedal/electric mode that can reach 45 kph; and a high-speed mode that goes all the way up to 60 kph.

The two-wheeler’s handlebar and seat post make for a tucked riding position, and incorporate LED light bars for visibility. Rounding out the strikingly futuristic design is the angular frame.

The Vision AMBY, on the other hand, trades the pedals for motorcycle-style foot pegs, and has a top speed of 60 kph. While not quite fast by high-end E-bike standards, this model appears to be geared more towards off-road use rather than riding on paved roads.

Knobby tires and beefy suspension bits hint at trail capability, while a flat seat and wide handlebar suggest capable maneuverability when braving difficult terrain.

Motor and battery specifics for the Vision AMBY have yet to be disclosed, but its powertrain will likely be at least as potent as the pedal-powered variant.

Either way, both bikes are a step towards an electric future for the German manufacturer.
