Despite the series of fuel price hikes and the implementation of limited capacity for public transportation, the Department of Transportation has assured that it will not allow any fare increase from public utility vehicles (PUV) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It has been my position and it continues to be my position. Humanap po tayo ng ibang paraan sa pakikipagtulungan sa mga jeepney driver at operator. Huwag lang tayong tumutok lang sa tinatawag na ‘increasing of fare,’” said DOTr secretary Arthur Tugade during the virtual signing of agreement for the so-called ‘Entsuperneur’ livelihood assistance project of the Jeepney Modernization Program.

Kung ako po ang masusunod, as of today, ayaw ko po ang dagdag-pamasahe. Ayaw ko po ng fare increase dahil ang tatamaan po diyan ay yun nakararami,” he emphasized.

Tugade’s statement was in reaction to the mounting appeals from transport groups to allow a new round of fare increase, as a way to cope with the fuel price hikes in the past seven weeks. The global oil price hikes are showing no signs of slowing down, as motorists start stocking up on petroleum in preparation for the winter season.

Drivers and operators of PUVs are also demanding a fare increase because of the limited capacity in public transportation to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Under the guidelines of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Infectious Diseases, passenger buses and jeepneys are only allowed to accommodate 50% of the total capacity.

Hindi po ako nakikipaglaban sa mga pang-ilan ilan. Ang pinoproteksiyunan po natin ay ang nakararami,” the DOTr chief stressed.

Jeepney organizations are planning to file a petition for fare increase before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
