Previously, we covered Kawasaki’s shiniest modern take on a classic bike, the Z900RS SE. With the positive feedback that the street model received from motorcycle enthusiasts online (us included), it comes as no surprise that the Kobe-based manufacturer has doubled down on the retro trend with a new teaser.
The 17-second video starts with a pair of classic helmet-wearing riders on mysterious motorcycles. The two glance at each other knowingly behind their sunglasses as they wait at a stoplight. When the signal goes from red to green, the screen cuts to black with text that reads ‘RETRO-EVOLUTION IS COMING.’ The teaser ends with the words ‘RETRO’ and ‘EVOLUTION’ merging into ‘RETROVOLUTION.’
This clip isn’t much to go on, but it does insinuate Kawasaki’s continued fervor for pumping out classic-inspired bikes with advanced performance prowess. From what little of the bike is shown in the teaser, we can see that it has old-school round mirrors, an upright seating position, and naked bike-appropriate handlebars.
Checking the Youtube video description (‘Retro’) doesn’t help either, but that hasn’t stopped netizens from hypothesizing what this upcoming machine from Team Green could be.
Many commenters think it’s a classic version of the Z650/Ninja 650 platform, dubbed the Z650 RS. This theory seems to be the most practical and possible—all Kawasaki has to do is dress a Z650 up like the Z900 RS, and the brand will have a beginner-friendly hot-selling retro roadster on its hands.
Some are hoping for something with a little more oomph, like a naked bike powered by the supercharged 998cc inline four from the H2, or a Z1200 RS, while others speculate that the ‘evolution’ bit of the equation has something to do with electric power.
What could it be? Let us know in the comments.
