Heading out of town this Undas to visit your dearly departed? Brace yourselves, as the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) foresees heavy traffic in the next few days with the yearly exodus fast approaching.

To prepare for the influx of motorists on tollways, MPTC will be implementing the Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko (SMSK) initiative along NLEX, SCTEX, CAVITEX, C5 LINK, and CALAX from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, 2021. Now in its 12th year, the program aims to enhance services on all MPTC thoroughfares to make travel easier, smoother, and safer.

Operations teams have been on high alert as early as Oct. 22, boosting safety protocols and customer service in anticipation of the crowds that will be visiting cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria.

MPTC expects the volume of vehicles along NLEX and SCTEX to increase by 10% during Undas season, so traffic management teams will adopt extended working hours to monitor busy areas like Balintawak, Mindanao, Karuhatan, Bocaue, San Simon, San Fernando, Tarlac, and Tipo. About 1,200 personnel will be deployed to ensure the safety of motorists and provide assistance such as medical services and incident response.

Loosening IATF restrictions mean that traffic on CAVITEX, C5 LINK, and CALAX is expected to grow by about 11%. That said, all customer service centers for said expressways will be open 24/7 and additional personnel will be assigned to assist motorists in both cash and RFID lanes.

To make travel even smoother, construction and lane closures along the mainline road of all MPTC expressways shall be suspended from Oct. 27 until Nov. 2, unless emergency repairs are needed. Free 24-hour towing service (to the nearest exit) will be available for Class 1 or light vehicles from Oct. 29, 6am to Nov. 2, 6am.

Traffic updates will be visible on MPTC’s social media accounts, so be sure to check those if you and your family will make the Undas journey this year.
