Sporty helmets with spoilers are becoming more and more popular these days. The part may or may not actually have relevant aerodynamic performance, but its cool factor is pretty hard to deny, especially if sportbikes are your thing.
Check out the spoiler-equipped BJ-9960 from Lev3. This lid looks just about ready to tear it up on the track or the twisties with an aggressively angled spoiler that looks right at home in a full-tuck position.
Is this helmet all show and no go? Or is it a worthy choice for the sporty street rider on a budget? Read our review below to find out.
Most eye-catching helmets have one feature that helps it stand out on the street or store shelf. For some, it’s either a loud graphic or sharp shell shape. The Lev3 BJ-9960 helmet has a long and sharp rear spoiler. The helmet mostly looks like your typical full-face street lid, but thanks to that aerodynamic piece of plastic, it stands out as the sporty rider’s choice.
Spoiler aside, the helmet is still a bit sporty because of the Crypton graphic, angular shell molding, and sharp chin portion. A lid like this would look best on a sportbike or modern sporty scooter or underbone.
One of the most important factors when it comes to full-face helmet comfort is the padding. Preferably, it should be snug and supportive, without being restrictive or abrasive to the skin. The padding in the BJ-9960 is soft, breathable, and doesn’t cause any unwanted pressure points on my head.
The plush material is also removable, washable, anti-bacterial, and antifungal. It reduces the level of inevitable helmet stink you get when used for extended periods of time. I do find the cutouts in the ear area a bit uncomfortable. While it’s a nice feature to have when installing communicator speakers, the way that the cutouts are shaped puts a slight yet noticeable amount of pressure on my ears, which can get uncomfortable on very long rides.
Ventilation-wise, the BJ-9960 gets passing marks thanks to closeable vents up top and on the chin bar, as well as the rear exhaust vents under the spoiler. Although the opening/closing mechanisms on the vents don’t feel quite as solid and tight as they should be.
Visibility is good for street use, with a wide enough field of view to spot most things on the road. Vertically, however, the viewport isn’t quite tall enough for when you’re fully tucked in and hunched over on a sportbike, which is odd considering the helmet’s sporty inclination.
At the back of the BJ-9960 are DOT and ECE ratings—two out of the three mainstream motorcycle helmet safety certifications. This means that you can wear the helmet out on the road confident that it has been tested and certified to protect your head in the event of a crash.
The lid passed both certification tests partly due to its lightweight impact-absorbent advanced hybrid ABS shell for absorbing initial crash impact, dual-density Expanded PolyStyrene (EPS) foam to absorb additional force, and DOT-spec quick release buckle to keep it on your head.
Another neat safety feature is the reflective bit on the neck roll padding, which adds extra visibility when hunched over on the bike.
The BJ-9960 has a couple of tricks up its sleeve, even with its price. First is the drop down sun visor, which is triggered by a handy switch on the left side of the helmet. This kind of sun protection is especially useful on hot and bright summer days.
Two more neat visor features are the easy-to-find center-mounted tab for easy operation, and the built-in breath guard that reduces fog build-up.
For the price, you get a pretty well-featured package in the BJ-9960. It’s got more than enough safety ratings, dual-visor tech, a user-friendly design, and a racy character. While it won’t perform quite as well as higher-end sport-styled lids, this helmet should be ample for the budget street rider with a thing for sportbikes.
Lev3 is showing a good amount of promise as a worthy contender in the budget helmet category, though it would probably benefit the brand to go with an easier to remember naming scheme instead of naming its helmets like printer models.
